TaxBit, a tax and accounting software company, grew from 50 to 260 employees across four cities in just one year. To maintain their culture during this rapid expansion, 70 employees participated in focus groups to establish five core cultural principles.

Through intimate group discussions from May to July 2022, team members from Salt Lake City, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. explored questions about their best work, areas for improvement, and aspirations. This inclusive process involved employees regardless of their tenure.

The five established cultural principles are:

  • Maximize Impact
  • Owner's Mindset
  • Transparency
  • Optimistic Realist
  • Win Together

These principles now guide TaxBit's operations, from hiring practices to client interactions. "Transparency came up in literally every single conversation," noted Richelle Medellín, Head of People and Culture.

Key Cultural Initiatives:

  • Weekly Friday team lunches across all offices
  • Company-wide Monday meetings
  • New employee resource group: TaxBit Inclusion Network
  • Cultural celebration events (Pride Month, Diwali, Native American Heritage Month)
  • Open dialogue regardless of position or tenure

The company emphasizes diversity and inclusion, recognizing that their product serves everyone who pays taxes. This approach has created an environment where employees feel empowered to contribute and grow.

TaxBit defines impact through a unique equation: IMPACT = SMART RISKS + EFFORT + RESULTS + LESSONS LEARNED

The company's culture promotes ownership, transparency, and collective success, allowing employees to maximize their impact while maintaining a balance between optimism and realism in their rapidly evolving industry.
