Opera Browser Now Supports Direct Bitcoin and Tron Cryptocurrency Payments
Opera has added Bitcoin and Tron payment support to its Android browser, expanding its cryptocurrency capabilities beyond Ethereum. Users can now perform Bitcoin transactions directly within the browser without requiring additional extensions.
This development follows Opera's strategic moves into blockchain technology since July 2018, including:
- Launching a "web 3 ready" Android browser
- Developing a crypto-friendly iOS app
- Creating a desktop browser with built-in digital wallet
- Partnering with a Swedish crypto broker for discounted ETH transactions

With over 350 million users globally, Opera's integration of Bitcoin functionality allows users to send and receive BTC directly through the browser, similar to sharing media files. Users can also make payments on websites for goods and services using cryptocurrency.
Charles Hamel, Opera Crypto's Product Lead, emphasizes that this move aims to make the decentralized web more accessible and accelerate cryptocurrency adoption for everyday transactions.
This development aligns with growing tech industry trends toward blockchain adoption, coinciding with HTC's launch of blockchain smartphones and Facebook's preparation for its Libra cryptocurrency launch in 2020.
While currently limited to Android, industry experts anticipate the Bitcoin support will expand to Opera's iOS and desktop platforms in the future.
